The events of September 11, 2001, are permanently engrained in our memories, and we all were touched by this tragedy in ways that have redefined our lives and perceptions. As many of you know, Chris was one of the victims. At 31 years of age, Chris was full of life - he possessed a tremendous sense of generosity, a great sense of humor, and was loved by everyone that he came in contact with. His life was heavily shaped by family, his college days at Fairfield University, a strong cadre of friends, and his career at the World Trade Center with Cantor Fitzgerald.
Since September 11th, our family has witnessed a tremendous outpouring of love and friendship from so many people who were touched by the life of Chris Slattery. People have extended themselves in many ways - there have been letters, phone calls, dinners, get-togethers, and various fundraisers organized by Chris' friends to raise money for the scholarship that has been established in his name. Everyone has been very generous with their time and resources to keep Chris' memory and spirit alive. There is no doubt Chris had the best circle of friends anyone could have.
Chris was one of the kindest and most fun loving people, and his generosity extended far beyond picking up a tab or contributing to a special event. For his family, this generosity shaped itself in many ways - traveling hundreds of miles to help celebrate when a new life was born into the family, spending his vacations working a puzzle with his niece, or flying a kite with his nephew, and in so many other ways that strengthened the bond that made us a family. He always made time for anyone who needed him, and he was always able to put a smile on your face.
Recognizing his generosity of spirit, the family felt the best way to celebrate Chris' life, and to sustain his memory, was to do it by extending help to others - as Chris often did. As this seemed the most fitting choice, the Chris Slattery 9/11 Memorial Foundation was established.
This foundation in Chris' name provides scholarships to students at Chaminade High School (Mineola, NY), and Fairfield University (Fairfield, CT), who have the skills to succeed in a first rate education, but lack the financial means to fund it. The foundation has paid out scholarships to students at both institutions each year since September 11th. And, because of the generosity and continued support of so many wonderful people, the scholarship payouts, and the number of recipients, continues to increase every year.
The Chris Slattery 9/11 Memorial Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation. All contributions are tax deductible.
